A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Jenkins (Continuous Integration Software) (affected version not known). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file core/src/main/java/hudson/model/FileParameterValue.java. The manipulation of the argument file with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. A path traversal vulnerability exists in Jenkins 2.145 and earlier, LTS 2.138.1 and earlier in core/src/main/java/hudson/model/FileParameterValue.java that allows attackers with Job/Configure permission to define a file parameter with a file name outside the intended directory, resulting in an arbitrary file write on the Jenkins master when scheduling a build.

The bug was discovered 10/10/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/09/2019 with CloudBees, Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared at jenkins.io. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-1000406 since 01/09/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 91 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
