In Django 1.11.x before 1.11.18, 2.0.x before 2.0.10, and 2.1.x before 2.1.5, an Improper Neutralization of Special Elements in Output Used by a Downstream Component issue exists in django.views.defaults.page_not_found(), leading to content spoofing (in a 404 error page) if a user fails to recognize that a crafted URL has malicious content.
The bug was discovered 01/04/2019. The weakness was published 01/09/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-3498 since 01/01/2019. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121056 (Debian DSA-4363-1 : python-django - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277739 (Fedora Security Update for python2-django1 (FEDORA-2019-5ad2149e99)).
Upgrading to version 1.11.18, 2.0.10 or 2.1.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
