Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Cisco IP Phone 8800 (IP Phone Software) (version unknown). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component User Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:
A vulnerability in the Cisco IP Phone 8800 Series Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct an arbitrary script injection attack on an affected device. The vulnerability exists because the software running on an affected device insufficiently validates user-supplied data. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by persuading a user to click a malicious link provided to the user or through the interface of an affected device. A successful exploit could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the context of the user interface or access sensitive system-based information, which under normal circumstances should be prohibited.
The bug was discovered 01/09/2019. The weakness was shared 01/10/2019 by Werner Schober as cisco-sa-20190109-phone-script as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-0461 since 11/27/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/26/2023). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13482 (Cisco IP Phone 8800 Series Arbitrary Script Injection Vulnerability(cisco-sa-20190109-phone-script-injection)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 106515†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
