Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in systemd-journald up to v240. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Command Line. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An allocation of memory without limits, that could result in the stack clashing with another memory region, was discovered in systemd-journald when a program with long command line arguments calls syslog. A local attacker may use this flaw to crash systemd-journald or escalate his privileges. Versions through v240 are vulnerable.
The bug was discovered 01/09/2019. The weakness was shared 01/11/2019 with Qualys as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-16864 since 09/11/2018. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication.
