A vulnerability was found in GNOME Web up to 3.31.4. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code of the file embed/ephy-web-view.c of the component JavaScript Handler. embed/ephy-web-view.c in GNOME Web (aka Epiphany) through 3.31.4 allows address bar spoofing because a page load triggered by JavaScript leads to updating an address as if it were triggered by a safer visit type (e.g., VISIT_LINK, VISIT_TYPED, VISIT_BOOKMARK, or VISIT_HOMEPAGE). This is similar to the CVE-2018-8383 issue in Microsoft Edge.
The bug was discovered 09/11/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/14/2019 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at gitlab.gnome.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-6251 since 01/13/2019. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 125 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197431 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Webkit2gtk Vulnerabilities (USN-3948-1)).
