strongSwan up to 5.1.2 IKEv2 improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in strongSwan up to 5.1.2 (Network Encryption Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component IKEv2 Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

IKEv2 in strongSwan 4.0.7 before 5.1.3 allows remote attackers to bypass authentication by rekeying an IKE_SA during (1) initiation or (2) re-authentication, which triggers the IKE_SA state to be set to established.

The weakness was released 04/14/2014 as strongSwan Authentication Bypass Vulnerability (CVE-2014-2338) as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at strongswan.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-2338 since 03/12/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:

An authentication bypass vulnerability was discovered in strongSwan. It can be triggered by rekeying an unestablished IKEv2 SA while it gets actively initiated.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73555 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : strongswan (SAT Patch Number 9089)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166997 (OpenSuSE Security Update for strongswan (openSUSE-SU-2014:0697-1)).

Upgrading to version 5.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at strongswan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at download.strongswan.org. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting reauth=yes; auto=add. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Only installations that actively initiate or re-authenticate IKEv2 IKE_SAs are affected.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92590), Tenable (73555), SecurityFocus (BID 66815†), Secunia (SA57823†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44160†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
