Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple watchOS up to 5.1.2 (Smartwatch Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component SQLite. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
SQLite 3.25.2, when queries are run on a table with a malformed PRIMARY KEY, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) by leveraging the ability to run arbitrary SQL statements (such as in certain WebSQL use cases).
The bug was discovered 01/22/2019. The weakness was published 01/22/2019 by Patrick Wardle (OSS-Fuzz) with Tencent as HT209448 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-20505 since 12/26/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:
Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved input validation.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121473 (Apple iTunes < 12.9.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371588 (Apple iCloud for Windows Prior to 7.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities(HT209451)).
Upgrading to version 5.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
