Details
A vulnerability was found in Drupal (Content Management System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Form State API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Drupal 6.x before 6.31 and 7.x before 7.27 does not properly isolate the cached data of different anonymous users, which allows remote anonymous users to obtain sensitive interim form input information in opportunistic situations via unspecified vectors. The advisory summarizes:
Drupal's form API has built-in support for temporary storage of form state, for example user input. This is often used on multi-step forms, and is required on Ajax-enabled forms in order to allow the Ajax calls to access and update interim user input on the server.
The weakness was released 04/16/2014 by Daniel F. Kudwien, Rodionov Igor, Ryan Szrama, Roman Zimmermann and znerol as SA-CORE-2014-002 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at drupal.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-2983 since 04/21/2014. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. The advisory points out:
When pages are cached for anonymous users (either by Drupal or by an external system), form state may leak between anonymous users. As a consequence there is a chance that interim form input recorded for one anonymous user (which may include sensitive or private information, depending on the nature of the form) will be disclosed to other users interacting with the same form at the same time. This especially affects multi-step Ajax forms because the window of opportunity (i.e. the time span between user input and final form submission) is indeterminable.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73635 (Drupal 7.x < 7.27 Forms API Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12932 (Drupal Core Form API Information Disclosure Vulnerability (SA-CORE-2014-002)).
Upgrading to version 6.31 or 7.27 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92675), Tenable (73635), SecurityFocus (BID 66977†), Secunia (SA58132†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44341†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
