Details
A vulnerability was found in GD Graphics Library up to 2.2.4 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function gdImageColorMatch of the file gd_color_match.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
gdImageColorMatch in gd_color_match.c in the GD Graphics Library (aka LibGD) 2.2.5, as used in the imagecolormatch function in PHP before 5.6.40, 7.x before 7.1.26, 7.2.x before 7.2.14, and 7.3.x before 7.3.1, has a heap-based buffer overflow. This can be exploited by an attacker who is able to trigger imagecolormatch calls with crafted image data.
The bug was discovered 01/15/2019. The weakness was presented 01/27/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared at php.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-6977 since 01/26/2019. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121510 (PHP 7.1.x < 7.1.26 Multiple vulnerabilities.), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176579 (Debian Security Update for libgd2 (DSA 4384-1)).
