A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.4.37 (Web Server). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component mod_session. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a session fixiation vulnerability (Expired). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-384. Authenticating a user, or otherwise establishing a new user session, without invalidating any existing session identifier gives an attacker the opportunity to steal authenticated sessions. In Apache HTTP Server 2.4 release 2.4.37 and prior, mod_session checks the session expiry time before decoding the session. This causes session expiry time to be ignored for mod_session_cookie sessions since the expiry time is loaded when the session is decoded.
The bug was discovered 01/22/2019. The weakness was published 01/30/2019 (Website). The advisory is available at httpd.apache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-17199 since 09/19/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
