Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.20.5 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the file kernel/bpf/verifier.c of the component Pointer Arithmetic. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
kernel/bpf/verifier.c in the Linux kernel before 4.20.6 performs undesirable out-of-bounds speculation on pointer arithmetic in various cases, including cases of different branches with different state or limits to sanitize, leading to side-channel attacks.
The bug was discovered 11/05/2018. The weakness was released 02/01/2019 by Jann Horn (Website). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-7308 since 02/01/2019. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 88 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172169 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2019:0765-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.20.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
