Eclipse OpenJ9 up to 0.11.x API jio_snprintf/jio_vsnprintf length memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Eclipse OpenJ9 up to 0.11.x and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function jio_snprintf/jio_vsnprintf of the component API Handler. The manipulation of the argument length as part of a Parameter leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In Eclipse OpenJ9, prior to the 0.12.0 release, the jio_snprintf() and jio_vsnprintf() native methods ignored the length parameter. This affects existing APIs that called the functions to exceed the allocated buffer. This functions were not directly callable by non-native user code.

The bug was discovered 02/08/2019. The weakness was presented 02/11/2019 with Oracle (Website). The advisory is available at bugs.eclipse.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-12547 since 06/18/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237144 (Red Hat Update for java-1.7.1-ibm (RHSA-2019:0474)).

Upgrading to version 0.12.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 106596†). See VDB-129618, VDB-130739 and VDB-131552 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
