Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in D-Link DIR-878 1.12A1 (Router Operating System). Affected is the function SetSysLogSettings of the file /HNAP1 of the component HNAP API. The manipulation of the argument IPAddress with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered on D-Link DIR-878 devices with firmware 1.12A1. This issue is a Command Injection allowing a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code, and get a root shell. A command Injection vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary OS commands via a crafted /HNAP1 POST request. This occurs when any HNAP API function triggers a call to the twsystem function with untrusted input from the request body for the SetSysLogSettings API function, as demonstrated by shell metacharacters in the IPAddress field.

The bug was discovered 02/12/2019. The weakness was shared 02/13/2019. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-8312 since 02/12/2019. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/10/2023). This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
