Details
A vulnerability has been found in SoX 14.4.2 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function lsx_make_lpf of the file effect_i_dsp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in SoX 14.4.2. lsx_make_lpf in effect_i_dsp.c has an integer overflow on the result of multiplication fed into malloc. When the buffer is allocated, it is smaller than expected, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 02/07/2019. The weakness was presented 02/15/2019 (Website). The advisory is available at lists.debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-8354 since 02/15/2019. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176957 (Debian Security Update for sox (DLA 1808-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
