Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.20.1 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function update_blocked_averages of the file kernel/sched/fair.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel before 4.20.2, kernel/sched/fair.c mishandles leaf cfs_rq's, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop in update_blocked_averages) or possibly have unspecified other impact by inducing a high load.
The bug was discovered 12/30/2018. The weakness was published 02/22/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-20784 since 02/22/2019. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely.
