Linux Kernel up to 4.20.11 SNMP NAT nf_nat_snmp_basic_main.c array index

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.20.11. It has been classified as critical. Impacted is an unknown function of the file net/ipv4/netfilter/nf_nat_snmp_basic_main.c of the component SNMP NAT Module. The manipulation leads to array index. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2019-9162. The attack must be carried out locally. In addition, an exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.20.11 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code block of the file net/ipv4/netfilter/nf_nat_snmp_basic_main.c of the component SNMP NAT Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a array index vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-129. The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel before 4.20.12, net/ipv4/netfilter/nf_nat_snmp_basic_main.c in the SNMP NAT module has insufficient ASN.1 length checks (aka an array index error), making out-of-bounds read and write operations possible, leading to an OOPS or local privilege escalation. This affects snmp_version and snmp_helper.

The bug was discovered 02/06/2019. The weakness was presented 02/25/2019 by Felix Wilhelm (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-9162 since 02/25/2019. An attack has to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 19 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277743 (Fedora Security Update for kernel kernel-headers (FEDORA-2019-7462acf8ba)).

Upgrading to version 4.20.12 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 106963†). See VDB-120204, VDB-127742, VDB-131067 and VDB-131104 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
