In the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) before 2.28, parse_reg_exp in posix/regcomp.c misparses alternatives, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and application exit) or trigger an incorrect result by attempting a regular-expression match.
The bug was discovered 09/19/2015. The weakness was published 02/26/2019. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-5155 since 02/25/2019. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1256 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
