sapi/fpm/fpm/fpm_unix.c in the FastCGI Process Manager (FPM) in PHP before 5.4.28 and 5.5.x before 5.5.12 uses 0666 permissions for the UNIX socket, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted FastCGI client.

The weakness was published 05/01/2014 by Christian Hoffmann as PHP 5.4.28 Released as confirmed release notes (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at php.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-0185 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. UNIX socket default permissions are set to 0666 unless explicitly overridden. A local user can connect to UNIX sockets to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the FastCGI Process Manager process.
