A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in OpenBSD 3.5/3.6 (Operating System). Affected is the function env_opt_add of the component Telnet Client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. Buffer overflow in the slc_add_reply function in various BSD-based Telnet clients, when handling LINEMODE suboptions, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a reply with a large number of Set Local Character (SLC) commands.
The bug was discovered 03/28/2005. The weakness was shared 03/28/2005 by Gaël Delalleau with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is available at idefense.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-0469 since 02/18/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.openbsd.org. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
