A vulnerability was found in Apache CXF up to 2.6.13/2.7.10 (Application Server Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component SOAP Handler. Apache CXF before 2.6.14 and 2.7.x before 2.7.11 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large request with the Content-Type set to text/html to a SOAP endpoint, which triggers an error.
The weakness was presented 05/07/2014 as HTML content posted to SOAP endpoint could cause OOM errors as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at cxf.apache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0109 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76292 (RHEL 5 : JBoss EAP (RHSA-2014:0798)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236340 (Red Hat Update for JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 6.2.4 (RHSA-2014:0799)).
Upgrading to version 2.6.14 or 2.7.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
