The php_handle_iff function in image.c for PHP 4.2.2, 4.3.9, 4.3.10 and 5.0.3, as reachable by the getimagesize PHP function, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a -8 size value.

The bug was discovered 02/23/2005. The weakness was presented 03/31/2005 with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is available at php.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0524 since 02/23/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 36 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
