F5 BIG-IP up to 11.4.1 iControl command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in F5 BIG-IP. Impacted is an unknown function of the component iControl. This manipulation causes command injection. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2014-2928. In addition, an exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in F5 BIG-IP (Firewall Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component iControl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The iControl API in F5 BIG-IP LTM, APM, ASM, GTM, Link Controller, and PSM 10.0.0 through 10.2.4 and 11.0.0 through 11.5.1, BIG-IP AAM 11.4.0 through 11.5.1, BIG-IP AFM and PEM 11.3.0 through 11.5.1, BIG-IP Analytics 11.0.0 through 11.5.1, BIG-IP Edge Gateway, WebAccelerator, WOM 10.1.0 through 10.2.4 and 11.0.0 through 11.3.0, Enterprise Manager 2.1.0 through 2.3.0 and 3.0.0 through 3.1.1, and BIG-IQ Cloud, Device, and Security 4.0.0 through 4.3.0 allows remote administrators to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in the hostname element in a SOAP request.

The weakness was presented 05/07/2014 by Brandon Perry with ZeniMax Online as SOL15220 / ID 448802 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.f5.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with F5. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-2928 since 04/21/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1202 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published 6 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78166 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : iControl vulnerability (SOL15220)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122739 (Multiple F5 BIG-IP Products iControl Remote Command Execution Vulnerability (SOL15220)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16998.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93015), Exploit-DB (34927), Tenable (78166), SecurityFocus (BID 67278†) and OSVDB (106728†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
