A vulnerability was found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 2.1.3 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block in the library codec\libpng_plugin.dll of the component PNG Image Handler. The manipulation as part of a WAV File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. codec\libpng_plugin.dll in VideoLAN VLC Media Player 2.1.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted .png file, as demonstrated by a png in a .wave file.
The weakness was presented 05/07/2014 by Aryan Bayaninejad as File 126564 as not defined exploit (Packetstorm). The advisory is shared at packetstormsecurity.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-3441 since 05/09/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Aryan Bayaninejad in Python and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122073 (VLC Media Player Memory Corruption Vulnerability).
