Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.8 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function hso_get_config_data of the file drivers/net/usb/hso.c of the component USB Device Handler. The manipulation of the argument ret with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The function hso_get_config_data in drivers/net/usb/hso.c in the Linux kernel through 4.19.8 reads if_num from the USB device (as a u8) and uses it to index a small array, resulting in an object out-of-bounds (OOB) read that potentially allows arbitrary read in the kernel address space.
The bug was discovered 12/12/2018. The weakness was published 03/21/2019 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.debian.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-19985 since 12/09/2018. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 36 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121289 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2019-65)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171998 (OpenSUSE Security Update for the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2019:0065-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (121289) and SecurityFocus (BID 107890†). Similar entries are available at VDB-63774, VDB-82964, VDB-107092 and VDB-115786. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
