A vulnerability was found in SQLite 3.27.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function fts5HashEntrySort of the file sqlite3.c of the component fts5 Prefix Query Handler. In SQLite 3.27.2, running fts5 prefix queries inside a transaction could trigger a heap-based buffer over-read in fts5HashEntrySort in sqlite3.c, which may lead to an information leak. This is related to ext/fts5/fts5_hash.c.
The bug was discovered 03/18/2019. The weakness was published 03/22/2019 by Patrick Wardle (OSS-Fuzz) with Google Project Zero (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-9936 since 03/22/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172380 (OpenSUSE Security Update for sqlite3 (openSUSE-SU-2019:1372-1)).
