Details
A vulnerability has been found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU (Virtualization Software) (version unknown) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file block/qcow.c of the component L2 Table Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the qcow_open function in block/qcow.c in QEMU before 1.7.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a large L2 table in a QCOW version 1 image.
The weakness was released 05/13/2014 by Prasad J Pandit as Bug 1097216 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0222 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Qemu block driver for the QCOW version 1 image format is vulnerable to an integer overflow flaw. It occurs due to weak input validations or logic errors. Such integer overflow could lead to buffer overflows, memory corruption or crash in Qemu instance.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74414 (Fedora 20 : qemu-1.6.2-6.fc20 (2014-6970)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168775 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for xen (SUSE-SU-2016:1154-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.gnu.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93140), Tenable (74414), SecurityFocus (BID 67357†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45706†).
