A vulnerability was found in Ghostscript up to 9.26 (Document Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block of the component Internal Dictionary. It was found that the superexec operator was available in the internal dictionary in ghostscript before 9.27. A specially crafted PostScript file could use this flaw in order to, for example, have access to the file system outside of the constrains imposed by -dSAFER.
The bug was discovered 03/21/2019. The weakness was disclosed 03/25/2019 by Cedric Buissart with Red Hat as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-3835 since 01/03/2019. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 240001 (TencentOS Server 3: ghostscript (TSSA-2022:0123)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157941 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for ghostscript (ELSA-2019-0633)).
Upgrading to version 9.27 eliminates this vulnerability.
