Fabrice Bellard QEMU Image Size block/qcow.c qcow_open File numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU (Virtualization Software) (unknown version). This affects the function qcow_open of the file block/qcow.c of the component Image Size Handler. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the qcow_open function in block/qcow.c in QEMU before 1.7.2 allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a large image size, which triggers a buffer overflow or out-of-bounds read.

The weakness was released 05/12/2014 by Prasad J Pandit as not defined posting (Mailing List). The advisory is shared at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0223 since 12/03/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:

A huge image size could cause s->l1_size to overflow. Make sure that images never require a L1 table larger than what fits in s->l1_size. This cannot only cause unbounded allocations, but also the allocation of a too small L1 table, resulting in out-of-bounds array accesses (both reads and writes).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76839 (CentOS 7 : qemu-kvm (CESA-2014:0927)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167852 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for KVM (SUSE-SU-2015:0929-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93148), Tenable (76839), SecurityFocus (BID 67391†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45707†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-13220. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
