The weakness was published 05/13/2014 as MS14-022 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-1754 since 01/29/2014. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73981 (MS14-022: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft SharePoint Server Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2952166)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110235 (Microsoft SharePoint Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS14-022)). The code will originate from the site running the Microsoft SharePoint software and will run in the security context of that site.

Applying the patch MS14-022 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13932.
