Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Cisco IOS and IOS XE up to 15.4(2)S (Router Operating System). This affects some unknown functionality of the component Locator/ID Separation Protocol Handler. The manipulation as part of a LISP Control Message leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Locator/ID Separation Protocol (LISP) implementation in Cisco IOS 15.3(3)S and earlier and IOS XE does not properly validate parameters in ITR control messages, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CEF outage and packet drops) via malformed messages, aka Bug ID CSCun73782.
The weakness was shared 05/14/2014 with Cisco as CSCun73782 as confirmed security notice (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3262 since 05/07/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
The vulnerability is due to insufficient checking of certain parameters in LISP control messages on the Ingress Tunnel Router (ITR). An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending malformed LISP control messages to the ITR. An exploit could allow the attacker to cause a vulnerable device to disable Cisco Express Forwarding and eventually drop traffic passing through.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79250 (Cisco IOS XE LISP ITR DoS (CSCun73782)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at software.cisco.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93156), Tenable (79250), SecurityFocus (BID 67399†), Secunia (SA58655†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030243†). Further details are available at tools.cisco.com. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
