The Acrobat web control in Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader 7.0 and earlier, when used with Internet Explorer, allows remote attackers to determine the existence of arbitrary files via the LoadFile ActiveX method.

The bug was discovered 04/04/2005. The weakness was shared 04/01/2005 by Robert Fly with NISCC (Website). The advisory is shared for download at niscc.gov.uk. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0035 since 01/07/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115319 (Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader Remote Denial of Service and Local File Disclosure).

Upgrading to version 7.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at adobe.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9153.
