Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Cisco NX-OS 7.0(0.128)S0 on Nexus (Router Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code of the file copy of the component Command Line Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the command-line interface in Cisco NX-OS 6.2(2a) and earlier allows local users to read arbitrary files via unspecified input, aka Bug ID CSCul05217.
The weakness was released 05/15/2014 with Cisco as CSCul05217 as confirmed security notice (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6975 since 12/05/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue. The advisory points out:
An attacker could leverage the NX-OS ''copy'' command to duplicate the contents of arbitrary files on the device to a user writable area of the filesystem. As the new file will be owned by the authenticated user, the attacker will be able to view the contents.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77284 (Cisco NX-OS Arbitrary File Read Vulnerability (CSCul05217 / CSCul23419)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO.
Upgrading to version 7.0(0)ZD(1.8), 7.1(0)ZD(0.95), 7.0(0)FVX(0.66), 7.1(0)ARP(0.2) or 7.1(0)D1(0.43) eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at software.cisco.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93171), Tenable (77284), SecurityFocus (BID 67426†), SecurityTracker (ID 1030250†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45926†). tools.cisco.com is providing further details.
