Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in IBM WebSphere Application Server up to 6.1.0.47/6.0.2.43 (Application Server Software). Affected is an unknown code of the component TLS Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) 6.1.0.0 through 6.1.0.47 and 6.0.2.0 through 6.0.2.43 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via crafted TLS traffic, as demonstrated by traffic from a CVE-2014-0160 vulnerability-assessment tool.
The weakness was presented 05/07/2014 as swg21671835 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0964 since 01/06/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:
IBM WebSphere Application Server is not vulnerable to the Heartbleed vulnerability (CVE-2014-0160) where secure data might not be protected. However, there is a potential denial of service on IBM WebSphere Application Server Version 6.1 and 6.0.2 when running the Heartbleed scanning tools or if sending specially-crafted Heartbeat messages.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87258 (IBM WebSphere Application Server Heartbeat Messages Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92877), SecurityFocus (BID 67322†), SecurityTracker (ID 1030280†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44454†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
