A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Dovecot up to 2.2.36.0/2.3.4.0 (Mail Server Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component Certificate Handler. The manipulation of the argument username with an unknown input leads to a certificate validation vulnerability (Impersonation). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-295. It was discovered that Dovecot before versions 2.2.36.1 and 2.3.4.1 incorrectly handled client certificates. A remote attacker in possession of a valid certificate with an empty username field could possibly use this issue to impersonate other users.
The bug was discovered 02/05/2019. The weakness was presented 03/27/2019 by Aki Tuomi as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-3814 since 01/03/2019. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1587.003 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 50 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172203 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for dovecot22 (SUSE-SU-2019:0900-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.2.36.1 or 2.3.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
