Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU up to 1.7.1 (Virtualization Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the file include/hw/virtio/virtio-net.h of the component State Loader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer signedness error in the virtio_net_load function in hw/net/virtio-net.c in QEMU 1.x before 1.7.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted savevm image, which triggers a buffer overflow.
The weakness was released 02/18/2014 by Petr Matousek as Bug 1066334 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4148 since 06/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:
An user able to alter the savevm data (either on the disk or over the wire during migration) could use this flaw to to corrupt QEMU process memory on the (destination) host, which could potentially result in arbitrary code execution on the host with the privileges of the QEMU process.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74457 (Oracle Linux 6 : qemu-kvm (ELSA-2014-0743)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157057 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu-kvm (ELSA-2015-0349)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
