Microsoft NetMeeting 3.0.1 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft NetMeeting 3.0.1. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in Microsoft NetMeeting 3.01 2000 before SP4 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via "..\.." (dot dot) sequences in a file transfer request.

The bug was discovered 03/03/2003. The weakness was presented 07/02/2003 by Hernán Ochoa, Gustavo Ajzenman and JavierGarcia Di Pa with Core Security Technologies as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at coresecurity.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-0505 since 07/03/2003. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at coresecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 115 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2230.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (12490), SecurityFocus (BID 7931†), OSVDB (2239†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-2262†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
