A vulnerability was found in Honeywell Experion PKS up to R400.5/R410.5/R430.1 and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file confd.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
A directory traversal vulnerability exists in the confd.exe module in Honeywell Experion PKS R40x before R400.6, R41x before R410.6, and R43x before R430.2, which could lead to possible information disclosure. Honeywell strongly encourages and recommends all customers running unsupported versions of EKPS prior to R400 to upgrade to a supported version.
The bug was discovered 12/18/2014. The weakness was disclosed 04/08/2019. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-5436 since 08/22/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1572 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version R400.6, R410.6 or R430.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
