The bug was discovered 03/22/2019. The weakness was disclosed 03/14/2019 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is available at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-0804 since 11/26/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. An information disclosure vulnerability exists in the way Azure WaLinuxAgent creates swap files on resource disks. An authenticated attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could view data in swap that is normally hidden.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237303 (Red Hat Update for WALinuxAgent (RHSA-2019:1527)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting sudo chmod 600 /mnt/resource/swapfile.
