The bug was discovered 04/09/2019. The weakness was published 04/09/2019 with Qihoo 360 Vulcan Team as confirmed security update guide (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-0805 since 11/26/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists when Windows improperly handles calls to the LUAFV driver (luafv.sys). An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code in the security context of the local system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.
It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91522 (Microsoft Windows Security Update for April 2019).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
