FreeBSD up to 5.4 sendfile information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in FreeBSD up to 5.4. Affected by this issue is the function sendfile. The manipulation results in information disclosure. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2005-0708. The attacker must have access to the local network to execute the attack. Moreover, an exploit is present. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in FreeBSD up to 5.4 (Operating System). Affected is the function sendfile. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The sendfile system call in FreeBSD 4.8 through 4.11 and 5 through 5.4 can transfer portions of kernel memory if a file is truncated while it is being sent, which could allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information.

The bug was discovered 04/04/2005. The weakness was disclosed 04/04/2005 by Sven Berkvens and Marc Olzheim (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ftp.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-0708 since 03/11/2005. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17984 (FreeBSD : SA-05:02.sendfile), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 4-STABLE eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.freebsd.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19982), Tenable (17984), SecurityFocus (BID 12993†), OSVDB (15289†) and Secunia (SA14842†). The entry VDB-1333 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
