A vulnerability was found in Joomla CMS up to 3.9.4 (Content Management System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Media Manager. The manipulation of the argument folder with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in Joomla! before 3.9.5. The Media Manager component does not properly sanitize the folder parameter, allowing attackers to act outside the media manager root directory.

The bug was discovered 03/13/2019. The weakness was shared 04/10/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-10945 since 04/08/2019. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

A public exploit has been developed in Python and been published 6 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 28 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
