hostapd/wpa_supplicant EAP access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in hostapd and wpa_supplicant. This affects an unknown part of the component EAP. The manipulation results in access control. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2019-9498. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in hostapd and wpa_supplicant (version unknown). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function of the component EAP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The implementations of EAP-PWD in hostapd EAP Server, when built against a crypto library missing explicit validation on imported elements, do not validate the scalar and element values in EAP-pwd-Commit. An attacker may be able to use invalid scalar/element values to complete authentication, gaining session key and network access without needing or learning the password. Both hostapd with SAE support and wpa_supplicant with SAE support prior to and including version 2.4 are affected. Both hostapd with EAP-pwd support and wpa_supplicant with EAP-pwd support prior to and including version 2.7 are affected.

The bug was discovered 04/10/2019. The weakness was released 04/17/2019 by Joshua (Website). The advisory is shared for download at w1.fi. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-9498 since 03/01/2019. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197427 (Ubuntu Security Notification for wpa_supplicant and hostapd vulnerabilities (USN-3944-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 71796†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-73689, VDB-132130, VDB-133473 and VDB-133472. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
