Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Cisco Expressway and TelePresence Video Communication Server up to X12.5.0 (Unified Communication Software). Affected is an unknown part of the component XML API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

A vulnerability in the XML API of Cisco Expressway Series and Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server (VCS) could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to cause the CPU to increase to 100% utilization, causing a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected system. The vulnerability is due to improper handling of the XML input. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specifically crafted XML payload. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to exhaust CPU resources, resulting in a DoS condition until the system is manually rebooted. Software versions prior to X12.5.1 are affected.

The bug was discovered 04/17/2019. The weakness was shared 04/18/2019 as cisco-sa-20190417-ces-tvcs-dos as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-1720 since 12/06/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Upgrading to version X12.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
