Details
A vulnerability was found in Samba (File Transfer Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component DNS Reply Flag Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The internal DNS server in Samba 4.x before 4.0.18 does not check the QR field in the header section of an incoming DNS message before sending a response, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU and bandwidth consumption) via a forged response packet that triggers a communication loop, a related issue to CVE-1999-0103.
The weakness was released 05/27/2014 with Samba as CVE-2014-0239.html as confirmed advisory (Website) via IRC. It is possible to read the advisory at samba.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0239 since 12/03/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
The server will not check the "reply" flag in the DNS packet header when processing a request. That makes it vulnerable to reply to a spoofed reply packet with another reply. Two affected servers could thus DOS each other.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74242 (Samba 4.x < 4.0.18 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195533 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Samba Vulnerabilities (USN-2257-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.0.18 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at samba.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
Use the BIND_DLZ DNS backend to avoid this issue. (...) Patch provided by Kai Blin of the Samba team.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93445), Tenable (74242), SecurityFocus (BID 67691†), Secunia (SA59579†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030309†). bugzilla.redhat.com is providing further details.
