Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.14.1/3.14.2/3.14.3/3.14.4/3.14.5 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function audit_filter_syscall. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The weakness was presented 05/28/2014 by Andy Lutomirski as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec) via Linux kernel DoS with syscall auditing. The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-3917 since 05/29/2014. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. Technical details and a private exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:
Issuing a system call with a random large number will OOPS, depending on configuration. A configuration that will enable this bug is: # auditctl -a exit, always -S open
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74339 (Fedora 20 : kernel-3.14.5-200.fc20 (2014-7033)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122632 (Red Hat Update for Kernel (RHSA-2014:1167)). The advisory illustrates:
It's possible that this can be extended to more than just a DoS -- with some care and willingness to exploit timing attacks, this is a read of arbitrary single bits in kernel memory.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at article.gmane.org. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting CONFIG_AUDITSYSCALL=n. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93437), Tenable (74339), SecurityFocus (BID 67699†), OSVDB (107531†) and Secunia (SA60011†).
