The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-3900. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. There is no exploit available.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.1-rc6 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function handle_rx of the component vhost_net Kernel Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
An infinite loop issue was found in the vhost_net kernel module in Linux Kernel up to and including v5.1-rc6, while handling incoming packets in handle_rx(). It could occur if one end sends packets faster than the other end can process them. A guest user, maybe remote one, could use this flaw to stall the vhost_net kernel thread, resulting in a DoS scenario.
The bug was discovered 04/25/2019. The weakness was shared 04/25/2019 by Jason Wang as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-3900 since 01/03/2019. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277821 (Fedora Security Update for kernel (FEDORA-2019-a6cd583a8d)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
