A service worker can send the activate event on itself periodically which allows itself to run perpetually in Firefox before version 60. This allows it to background monitor activity by users such as IP addresses visited.
The bug was discovered 10/16/2018. The weakness was released 04/26/2019 by Samuel Gross (xisigr). This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-5179 since 01/03/2018. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
