A crash can occur when processing a crafted S/MIME message or an XPI package containing a crafted signature. This can be used as a denial-of-service (DOS) attack because Thunderbird reopens the last seen message on restart, triggering the crash again. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 60.5.
The weakness was disclosed 04/26/2019. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-18513 since 10/19/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371619 (Mozilla Thunderbird Multiple Vulnerabilities (MFSA 2019-03)).
Upgrading to version 60.5.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
