Details
A vulnerability was found in Alfresco Enterprise 4.1.6. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component XHTML File Upload Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a html injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Alfresco Enterprise before 4.1.6.13 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via (1) an XHTML document, (2) a <% tag, or (3) the taskId parameter to share/page/task-edit.
The weakness was disclosed 05/28/2014 by Nicolas Verdier with TEHTRI-Security as VU#537684 as confirmed advisory (US CERT). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Alfresco. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-2939 since 04/21/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 21 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 4.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4.1.6.13 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
As a general good security practice, only allow connections from trusted hosts and networks. Note that restricting access does not prevent XSS attacks since the attack comes as an HTTP request from a legitimate user's host. Restricting access would prevent an attacker from accessing the web interface using stolen credentials from a blocked network location.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93516), SecurityFocus (BID 67678†) and Secunia (SA58802†). The entries VDB-13419 and VDB-13418 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
