A vulnerability was found in NSS up to 3.38. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code of the component SSLv2 Handler. The manipulation as part of a ClientHello leads to a 7pk security vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-254. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
When handling a SSLv2-compatible ClientHello request, the server doesn't generate a new random value but sends an all-zero value instead. This results in full malleability of the ClientHello for SSLv2 used for TLS 1.2 in all versions prior to NSS 3.39. This does not impact TLS 1.3.
The bug was discovered 09/03/2018. The weakness was disclosed 04/29/2019 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-12384 since 06/14/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1211 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 36 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118058 (Scientific Linux Security Update : nss on SL6.x i386/x86_64 (20181009)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Scientific Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171789 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for MozillaFirefox, mozilla-nspr and mozilla-nss (SUSE-SU-2018:4236-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.39 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
